The History of Singapore

6 January, 2009

Although Singapore is a small country, Singapore had a history (Of course!) The history was not very long (Dating back to only the 1400s), yet, Singaporeans look at the history as a important piece of knowledge. It tells us that we have to defend our country ourselves, to protect it ourselves. Here is the history of Singapore…

-Sang Nila Utama-

Everyone knows about Sang Nila Utama. He was the prince of Srivijaya and went out to find land. Legend says that he went to an island and began explored it. Very soon, he found a deer. He took his bow and arrow and tried to kill the deer. He missed and surprised the deer, which ran away. Sang Nina Utama and his men chased the deer. It ran and ran and soon, Sang Nila Utama couldn’ t see the deer anywhere. Suddenly, he saw a beautiful island out at sea. “We must get to that island,” said Sang Nila Utama.

Sang Nila Utama and his men began to seat on their boat and set off. All of a sudden, there was a storm. The men all threw their things overboard to prevent them from sinking. However, the boat was still going to sink. “Oh my, we’ll drown!” said one of the men. Sang Nila Utama, who never give up hope, threw his crown into the sea. The storm stopped suddenly. Then, a lion appeared at the island. When it saw the boat, it roared fiercely. “Your Majesty, there’ s a lion at the island! We must leave immediately, else we’ll be eaten!” said one of Sang Nila Utama’ s men.

Sang Nila Utama nodded his head and said,” I’ m not scared of this lion. This island will be my country, and as brave as the lion it will be.” So they continued to sail to the island. Soon, they reached Temasek, which Sang Nila Utama had called to be Singapore (Lion City).

This may be an incredible tale, but it was half true, half false. Sang Nila Utama did sail from the island to Temasek (now Singapore), but they never encounter any storms. And even if they encounter the storm, the storm will NEVER stop if Sang Nila Utama throw his crown into the sea. The story was kind of like a fairy tale (except there’ s no faries in it…).

-Sir Stamford Raffles-

Sir Stamford Raffles is a famous man, not only because he founded modern Singapore but also discovered many animals and plants. He went to Singapore at  29 January 1819 in a ship. When he saw how Singapore looks like, he was so surprised…there is fresh water near the village and more good things! His eyes gleamed (Well, I never said that his eyes REALLY gleamed) at the sight of the village and decided to make it as a port!

Raffles founded modern Singapore. He improved education and founded schools, centres etc. He helped many people. He is our hero!! Without him, we might not survived…

-The Japanese Occupation-

In 1942, it was the start of the Japanese Occupation!

Japan’ s population had grown. They did not have much food and materials for all the people. So they decided to invade other countries to get more stuffs for their people.

When Japan attacked Singapore, it was a surprise for the British ( Who ruled Singapore ). But they can’ t defeat the Japanese. So, they surrendered. The Japanese treat us as slaves.

In the end, when the Americans bombed the two Japanese cities with 2 atomic bombs, the Japanese surrendered.

Hurray!!!

-The Communists-

The Communists is a party that protests against the British, saying that they won’ t want them. Workers who did not want to join the party were forced to strike against the Brits!

At last, the British got away. Singapore is in independence at last!!
